Reactions To Samsung’s New Curvy Screen
Samsung launched a new smartphone this week with the first-ever curved display screen. The Galaxy Round—the company’s Galaxy Note variant with a curved display—moves Samsung ever closer to releasing a wearable, possibly unbreakable, screen of the future. For now, the phone is only available in South Korea for the hefty price tag of 1.089 million won, or $1000.
“It’s a step forward for having unbreakable gadgets and flexible devices eventually. But for now, the new phone is more of a symbolic product,” said analyst Nam Dae-jong of Hana Daetoo Securities.
Consumers would surely be interested in a phone with an unbreakable screen, but until that is achieved there is uncertainty over whether curved screens will be a hit.
Market Advantage Of Flexible Screens
What competitive advantage does a curved screen offer Samsung? In a market racing to develop the next big thing with a heavy emphasis on wearable devices, a flexible, curved screen is a huge breakthrough.
In a market dominated by strong competitors like Apple and LG Electronics, Samsung might be able to pull itself ahead of other smartphone manufacturers if it is able to successfully distribute and sell high-end phones with flexible screens. However, Nam Dae-jong says Samsung does not currently have the capacity to manufacture the curved-screened Galaxy Round for the masses.
Another problem is that some experts don’t feel consumer interest in curved screens is high enough yet to encourage them to switch from their current smartphones. Dae-jong also explained that the Galaxy Round lacks any overly impressive features aside from its curved shape.
Galaxy Round Specs
The new Galaxy Round has a 5.7-inch curved display and is lighter than its predecessor the Galaxy Note 3. The main advantage presented by the Round’s unique design is a more comfortable, ergonomic grip. The tilt function allows users to easily check phone information and data related to missed calls, notifications, and battery life.
