Amazon’s New Appstore Incentive Program Targets Both Developers & Consumers

09 October 2013

Amazon has announced a new program to entice developers to build apps for their products as well as new cash back incentives for consumers who purchase select apps. The company’s doubled-up effort to rejuvenate its app store suggests that Amazon wants a more robust app marketplace for its devices.

With the introduction of the Appstore Developer Select program, the company hopes to encourage developers to create more apps optimized for Amazon devices like the Kindle Fire, which runs on Fire OS. The new program offers developers marketing assistance and promotional benefits, plus discounts on various Amazon services. The discount would apply to Amazon Web Service (AWS), a service that can be used to run mobile apps.

If the program is successful at encouraging more developers to build Android apps for Amazon, both the developers and the company will reap the rewards—Amazon would enjoy a larger selection of quality, optimized apps in its Appstore. However, there is a screening process for developers who wish to join Amazon’s Appstore Developer Select program:  the app must be high-def, available for purchase on both the Kindle Fire and the Amazon Appstore and must use Amazon’s API’s when possible.

As for developers, those who qualify for Amazon’s program will receive “premium” treatment and their apps will be placed in more desirable spots in the Amazon Appstore, including higher spots on app category lists, the Appstore homepage and on Kindle Fire’s lock screen ad space. There are additional benefits linked to Amazon Coins and discounts on AWS spending.

And what would developers and their apps be without consumers? Amazon is also doing its part to encourage consumers to purchase more apps from with “Appstore Coin Rewards.” Any app that qualifies for Amazon’s Appstore Developer Select program will also be featured as an app that consumers can receive cash back from, both from the initiate purchase and subsequent in-app purchases.
